What to Expect at Your Dental Exam & Cleaning

A comprehensive dental exam will be performed by your dentist at each exam.

It will include the following:

  • Examination of x-rays: X-rays are essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions.
  • Oral cancer screening: A doctor will check your face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any abnormal signs or growths.
  • Gum disease evaluation: A doctor will check the gums and bone around the teeth for any signs of periodontal disease.
  • Oral examination: All tooth surfaces and existing restorations will be checked for decay.

PROFESSIONAL DENTAL CLEANING

A professional dental cleaning (prophylaxis) is performed by a Registered Dental Hygienists (RDH). Your cleaning appointment will include:

  • Tartar removal (calculus): Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth and is firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
  • Plaque removal: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums. This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease.
  • Teeth polishing: Our hygienist will remove stain that is not otherwise removed during brushing and flossing and polish your teeth.
